Year 2 Blubber experiment
**Exploring How Blubber Works: Year 2 Investigate Polar Animal Survival**
Our Year 2 pupils have been busy becoming young scientists as part of their World Around Us topic on *Polar Lands*. This week, the children took part in a hands‑on investigation to discover how blubber helps polar animals survive in freezing environments.
To begin, the class discussed animals such as polar bears, seals, and walruses, and learned that these creatures have a thick layer of fat—called *blubber*—that keeps them warm in icy waters. To explore this idea, the children carried out a simple but exciting experiment using ice, water, and a “blubber glove” made from fat.
The pupils quickly noticed that the hand inside the “blubber glove” stayed much warmer, while the uncovered hand felt the cold almost immediately. This helped them understand how blubber acts as insulation, trapping heat and protecting animals that live in polar regions.
The children loved becoming real scientists for the day, and the experiment sparked lots of curiosity about how animals adapt to survive in extreme climates. We are so proud of their enthusiasm and growing confidence as young investigators.
