Year 3 Students Weigh in on Learning with Hands‑On Measurement Investigation!
20th Jan 2026
This week, our Year 3 MM/COK students took part in an exciting practical investigation all about measuring weight using non‑standard units. The activity, designed to strengthen their understanding of early measurement concepts, encouraged pupils to work collaboratively, apply technical vocabulary, and use real measuring equipment to solve problems.
Working in small groups, students explored how objects can be compared and ordered by weight using non‑standard units such as cubes, counters, or classroom resources. They also used balance scales to test their predictions, developing fluency with key terms including mass, heavier, lighter, balance point, estimate, and measurement.
Throughout the investigation, pupils were challenged to:
- Make predictions about the mass of everyday objects
- Use non‑standard units to measure weight accurately
- Record their findings using tables and labelled drawings
- Compare results within their groups and discuss variations
- Reflect on how scales help us achieve consistent and reliable measurements
Well done Year 3!!
